Walter Smith, Jr. is an experienced teacher, educator, and musician. He attended both Southern University in New Orleans and Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He earned his undergraduate degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and his Master of Education degree at the University of New Orleans. After completing his educational pursuits at UNO, he earned a Certificate of Proficiency in Band Instrument Repair at Red Wing, Minnesota.  

As a saxophonist, Walter performed locally in the New Orleans area and across the United States with various musicians. Walter has over 30 years experience in the field of education. He has worked with students from elementary through adulthood, both privately and in public settings. He currently serves as the Fine Arts Manager for the Houston Independent School District in Houston, Texas.

Walter works tirelessly to promote music education in HISD for all students despite the differences in facilities and resources between schools.
