Shirley Jean Vaughn-Wiggins

Shirley Jean Vaughn-Wiggins is a native of Waco, Texas.  Shirley was the proud daughter of the late Willie and Earnestine Vaughn.   She graduated in 1965 from A.J. Moore High School.  There she sang with the Harry T. Burleigh Chorus, J.A. Kirk Chorus and Modern Music Masters.  Shirley was a member of the Toliver Chapel Baptist Church, where she was a soloist and pianist for various ministries.  She studied piano with the late Willie Ray Anderson for 10 years.
Shirley Jean began her college days in the fall of 1965 at Prairie View where she decided to study voice instead of piano.  She studied voice with the late Dr. H. Edison Anderson.  She was a 2nd soprano and traveled with the A Cappella Choir.  She graduated with a B.A. degree in Music – 1970.  Also, Shirley did some graduate studies at Texas Southern University.
Shirley continued with her music by becoming a music teacher in the public school system in Houston.  Her choirs have received Sweep Stakes and First Place awards at the University Interscholastic League and many, many music festivals.
She retired in 2001. She was encouraged to returned to Clifton in 2002 as a part time choral director. Retired teachers are suppose to work a limited number of hours, therefore to prepare choirs to compete fully would require many hours of preparation. Shirley only entered one choir each year. Shirley recently retired for good having taught in the public school system for 40 years
Shirley is a member of TMEA, MENC, TCDA, HMTA, the Financial Secretary for The Houston Chapter of the Links, Inc. and a faithful member of Champion Forest Baptist Church, where she sings alto in the choir and soprano with the Wednesday night PRAISE Team.
Shirley Jean Vaughn-Wiggins is the proud wife of John Wiggins, Jr.  They have two sons: John, III (wife, Pleshette) and Jaison (wife, Letitia).  Her hobbies are sewing, reading and working in the yard.
