Richard F. Lee is a native of Houston, Texas. He received his Bachelor's degree from Texas Southern University in music education under major professors Benjamin J. Butler, Lanny Steele and Ruth Stewart. While still a student at Texas Southern, he played his first major professional performances on stage with Nancy Wilson. He completed his Master's degree at Colorado State University where he was a member of the National Intercollegiate Band. He has also pursued Doctoral studies at Howard University and the University of Maryland.

Mr. Lee is married to his college sweetheart, Mrs. Betty Webb Lee, and they have been blessed with two beautiful daughters, Elizabeth Elaine and Ericka Michelle and two grandsons, Jarrett and Xavier.

This skilled trumpeter's performance credits include work with many ensembles and cover a wide range of musical styles. The Prince George Philharmonic Orchestra, John F. Kennedy Opera House Orchestra, and Sonny Franklin Big Band are among the many ensembles to benefit from Lee's musical expertise. In addition, Richard Lee has performed with notable entertainers such as Redd Foxx and the O'Jays. Lee’s band arrangements have been performed on the East coast as well as in the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC).

Lee's teaching credits are no less impressive. He held his first college faculty position at Shaw University (North Carolina), followed by a 15 year tenure at Howard University. There, he held his first "Director of Bands" position. He then returned home to Houston (and to his alma mater), to take the helm of the "Ocean of Soul" at Texas Southern University. This was especially important as Lee was a founding member of that prestigious ensemble in 1969. As the retired Director of Bands, Lee continues at Texas Southern today, teaching classes in the Music Department and coordinating the department’s instrumental chamber ensembles.

Mr. Lee's leadership has been recognized in appointments as Chair of the Department of Music, Chair of the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC) Band Directors Consortium and a feature article in School Band and Orchestra magazine as an outstanding Band Director and Music Educator. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity and the TSU Ocean of Soul Alumni Association.

Richard Lee continues to inspire young musicians by exemplifying what has become his teaching mantra, “To be successful in music, you must learn to teach, write and perform!" and “Music has a great power for bringing people together”!
