Gerald Stewart attended the Waldo-Matthews H. S. in Silsbee, Texas.  He played in the very first band at the school.  He started playing the Clarinet and in his senior year he added the Tenor Saxophone.  The top awards in high school were the John Phillip Sousa Award, and 1st place in the Omega Psi Phi regional talent contest.  Gerald earned his B. A. degree in music from Prairie View A & M in 1960. His senior recital was performed on the Flute.  In 1964 he earned his M.M. Ed. Degree from the Vander-Cook College of Music in Chicago, Ill. His 40 years of teaching begin in 1960-66 at the West Liberty H.S. in Liberty, TX.  At the end of 1966 school year through 1976, he was the band director of the Charlton-Pollard Senior High School Band in Beaumont, Texas.  In his first year, his band won 1st place in regional and State U.I.L. Concert Contest. In 1976 he took his High School stage band to perform and tour Europe. From 1976 – 86 he was the head Band Director at the Beaumont Charlton-Pollard High School (merger of two schools-integration). His Concert and Marching band won nine first divisions and four U.I.L. Sweepstakes. During this time Gerald studied Jazz at Berkeley School of Music in Boston; Concert Band music at North Texas, and Marching Band at L.S.U. in Baton Rouge. In 1979 Gerald received the Certificate of Merit by the legislative Black Caucus of the State of Texas for outstanding contributions in the field of Entertainment and for service and commitment to Black Texans; as well as, to the State as a whole. In 1986 - 2000 Gerald was the Band Director of the M.B. Smiley High School Golden Eagle Band in the N.F.I.S.D. in Houston, TX.  He retired at the end of the 2000 school year. Gerald is now performing with several big bands, combos, and duos in and around Houston.  He is also teaching private lessons, and working as a music consultant, and Clinician.
