Eunice Denkins Cooks

Mrs. Eunice Denkins Cooks is a celebrated soprano in Houston, Texas and abroad. Mrs. Cooks' humble studies started in the Houston Independent School District and continued at Texas Southern University as an accomplished pianist and vocalist.
Using her keen musical instinct Mrs. Cooks sang for the Houston Symphony Chorus and became one of the founding members of the Houston Ebony Opera Guild. In the fall of 1989 started singing with Houston Grand Opera Chorus and has celebrated 20 years of performing. During that time Mrs. Cooks has appeared in numerous operas over the years. To name a few, Puccini's Tosca, La Boheme and Turandot; Mozart's The Magic Flute; Verdi's II Trovatore, La Traviata, Aida, and Macbeth; Boito's Mefistofele; Samson and Delilah and in the 2005-2006 season performed in the opening production of Boris Godunov. The last performance Mrs. Cooks performed in was a world premier of "Chorus" in 2009 where the honor of escorting the Maestro to the stage after each performance was bestowed on her.
Other accomplishments a winner in the American Traditions Competition (Savannah, Georgia), toured with the Houston Grand Opera's production of "Porgy and Bess" in Milan, Italy ( La Scala Opera House); Paris, France (La Bastille Opera House) and in Madrid, Spain (Teatro Real Opera House.)
Mrs. Cooks has also spent her 25 year teaching career at Blackshear Elementary and recently retired from Garden Villas Music Academy in the Houston Independent School District.
One the most important things that Mrs. Cooks wanted to do was to share her abilities and talents with the students in her music classes. Although Mrs. Cooks taught reading, math and music to Kindergarten, first and second graders, you would think the students performed and sounded like third graders, which she is most proud.
Presently Mrs. Cooks is blessed to be teaching piano and voice at home, active in her Historical church St. John Missionary Baptist Church, singing around the Houston area, and playing for Galilee Community Baptist Church. In the spring she will travel to Dallas to perform in a Concert given by friends. Mrs. Cooks is also a Top Lady of Distinction in the Missouri City-Space City Chapter of Houston and the proud mother of two wonderful children and married to the love of her life.
